Setup Guide

About 30 minutes, in one sitting, on your parent's computer. Three steps.

1. Install GoldenProtect on your parent's computer

Get the installer from the download page while you are on the computer that will run GoldenProtect. The app is not yet signed with a paid publisher certificate, so both systems show a warning the first time. It is expected, and the steps below get past it.

First, which file does your parent's computer need?

Check this on your parent's computer (or ask them to read you the line). It takes a minute and avoids a wasted visit.

Windows

On Mum’s PC open Settings, System, About, and read "System type".

  • "64-bit operating system, x64-based processor": choose Windows, Intel/AMD (most PCs).
  • "ARM-based processor": choose Windows, ARM (Snapdragon).

Mac

On Mum’s Mac click the Apple menu, then About This Mac, and read "Chip" (or "Processor").

  • Chip says "Apple M1", "M2", "M3" or "M4": choose Mac, Apple silicon (M1, M2, M3, M4).
  • Processor says "Intel": choose Mac, Intel.

Windows

  1. Open the downloaded .exe file.
  2. If you see "Windows protected your PC" (SmartScreen), click More info, then Run anyway.
  3. Follow the installer. GoldenProtect starts when it finishes.

macOS

  1. Open the downloaded .dmg and drag GoldenProtect into Applications.
  2. In Applications, right-click (or Control-click) GoldenProtect and choose Open.
  3. Click Open in the Gatekeeper dialog. macOS remembers your choice.
  4. Still blocked? Go to System Settings, Privacy & Security, scroll down and click Open Anyway.

2. Enter your license key there

On first launch GoldenProtect asks for a license key. It looks like GP-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX. Sign in at your dashboard to find it, copy it, and paste it in. Each license covers one computer; the Family plan includes three.

Choose the guardian password

Next you choose the guardian password. It protects the settings, so your parent can't change them by accident. Pick something you will remember and your parent won't guess, and write it down somewhere safe. The password is stored only on this computer, not on our servers.

Choose the websites

Pick about six sites your parent uses every day, such as email, WhatsApp Web, YouTube and the news. Each one becomes a big tile on the home screen. Fewer, bigger choices are easier to use. You can skip this and add sites later.

To change sites later, press F12 on the home screen, enter the guardian password, and open the websites tab to add or remove them.

If you forget the password

The guardian password you set in the app is stored only on your parent's computer, so we can't reset it remotely. If you forget it, reinstall GoldenProtect: your license is kept, and the setup wizard lets you choose a new password. Need these steps explained? Contact us and we'll write back. This is separate from the password for your guardian account on the website and the guardian app; if you forget that one, use Forgot Password on the guardian sign-in page.
